On Saturday, February 22nd, Claire Hudson, junior, competed against 29 other talented students from around the state of Texas in the Poetry Out Loud State Finals hosted by the Texas Commission on the Arts in conjunction with the national Poetry Out Loud contest.
The contest was held in the Texas Spirit Theater in the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, TX. Claire competed as number 28 of 30 and recited “Cartoon Physics, part 1” by Nick Flynn and “Bright Copper Kettles” by Vijay Seshadri in the first round. She advanced as one of five to the final round and recited “And If I Did, What Then?” by George Gascoigne to earn her 2nd place finish.
We are proud of Claire’s perseverance and tenacity in preparing for this competition and promoting the love and importance of poetry in her performances. What an amazing accomplishment! In recognition of her success, Claire will be awarded a monetary prize individually and a gift of $200 is given to the school to purchase books of poetry.
