Panther Sports Highlights - April 23-28, 2019

Lacrosse Boys
Parish Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse played away on April 25, against Plano Senior High School in the last regular season game of the year. Parish started the game very slowly letting Plano build a 3-0 lead. After setting down, the Panthers battled back to tie the game after the first quarter (4-4), and lead at half-time (8-6). Parish continued to pull away during the game eventually winning the game 13-8. The game was hugely important for both teams because of district playoff seeding, with the winner earning a higher seed.

The Panthers are now 6-3 on their divisional season and qualified for just the third time in school history for district playoffs. In addition, the Panthers earned a district home playoff game, the first ever in program history.

Highlights of the game included Noah Love ’20 scoring two goals and three assists; Daniel Steckler ’19 making three goals and one assist; Henry Kull ’20 with two goals and two assists; Cale Watkins ’19 with two goals and one assist; and Preston Shanks ’20 with three goals.  Defensively, Bryson Boyette ’21 had four ground balls and two caused turnovers and Adam Redd ’20 had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Lacrosse Girls
On April 23, Parish Girls’ Lacrosse played Ursuline Academy. The game ended in a 7-2 loss. Parish defense shut Ursuline down the first half, not allowing them to score for the first 15 minutes of play. Katie Palmer ‘21 had two goals on five shots; Kate McGarrity ’19 had a standout game with nine groundballs, one draw control, two caused turnovers, and two interceptions; Keirra Vinson ’19 had eight saves in cage. 

Parish Girls’ Lacrosse ended the season ranked sixth in Division II, the highest seed in program history. In the first round of playoffs on April 25, they played Plano, the third seed. Parish fought hard but lost 15-1. McGarrity had the only goal for Parish. The defense was tested, but worked hard the entire game. Shayna Daniel ‘19 had eight ground balls and five draw controls. Vinson had ten pivotal saves in goal.

Track and Field
Parish Varsity Track and Field had six student-athletes who qualified to compete at the TAPPS 6A Regional Track and Field Championship held on April 25, at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth. The following student-athletes represented Parish at Regionals: Reagan Cooper ’19, Kaleb Culp ‘20, Paige Jenkins ’21, Jai Moore ‘21, Cameron Overton ‘19 and Kahlil Overton ’19.

Jai Moore:     8th place in 100m - 11.99; 2nd place in High Jump - 5-10 PR; 3rd place in Long Jump - 21-3.75 PR
Kahlil Overton:        4th place in 400m - 51.39
Cameron Overton:    2nd place in 200m - 21.82
Reagan Cooper:        Tied for 7th place in High Jump - 4-6

Regionals served as a qualifying competition for State Championship with four top finishes from each event moving on to State. Parish Track and Field had a very strong performance with the following athletes set to represent Panthers at State:

Cameron Overton: 200m
Kahlil Overton: 400m
Paige Jenkins: 100m Hurdles

Tennis
The Second Annual Parish Varsity and JV Tennis Classic took place on Sunday, April 28, at Hockaday’s tennis courts. Parish’s Varsity and JV players hosted the tournament where they teamed up with fellow classmates, family, friends and faculty and staff members. The Classic was a friendly, but competitive event as the players were divided into four draws of a round robin format. Within the flights, players contended to win the most games against their opponents. The top flight had the most exciting finish with the two top teams ending with the same amount of points! To determine the winner, Grant Carrington ’20 and Head of Upper School Chris Bertha faced off against Chase Barclay ’20 and partner, Ashlyn Duy, Bishop Lynch’s #1 singles player, in a 10 point tiebreaker. The Parish duo of Bertha and Carrington prevailed in a thrilling and hard fought tiebreaker! Rounding out the next flight were varsity player, Jordan McGonnell ‘22, and her brother and MS tennis player, Liam McGonnell ‘24. They showed their sibling chemistry and won the second flight! In the third flight, the father and son duo of Mr. Andrew Lawson and Lawson Wallace ‘21, a varsity player, teamed up again for the second year in the row. Their determination to win and improvement from last year paid off as they claimed the third flight championship! Lastly, the fourth flight winners were JV player Chiraag Mittal ‘22 and his advisor Kevin Burgess, who showed the winning results of their budding relationship. Overall, it was a fun and beautiful day of tennis and the team looks forward to next year’s tournament!
